About Donna

I graduated from Furman University in 1987 with a BS in chemistry with a 4.0 GPA. While I'm proud of that GPA, I encouraged my children to go ahead and get a B in their first semester so they would never have the pressure of perfection. I then got my MS in environmental science & engineering from UNC-Chapel Hill. During that time I also took education classes.
After graduation, I taught chemistry and physics at a private school for two years. Then I was a full-time homeschooling mom for 20 years. During this time, I taught my own girls, taught homeschool classes and tutored. Education and teaching is certainly in my blood. I love to see kids 'get it'.
Individualized,
Customized Learning

I do not have a pre-selected course of study. Many of my tutorees bring in their school work to get assistance and clarification and understanding. Others have asked me to oversee their homeschooling venture by providing structure to their math learning. Some want me to provide supplemental material. There is no one-size-fits-all to my tutoring.
Why math?

I love math and want to share my love of it. I believe that all kids can be successful at math, but that some have been turned off by confusing teaching. Math has a logic and beauty to it. And understanding its logic can help you in all of your thinking. It develops your brain.
The mathematical sciences are
the same way. You logically
study the world around
you and that study expands you.

Math Assessments
Using the online assessment tool at LetsGoLearn.com (which I am not affiliated with), I can help you find out exactly what each student is struggling with.

There are three tests available: K-7, pre-algebra, and algebra.

Online Option
Using bitpaper as a whiteboard and Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime for conferencing, tutoring can be done at a distance. For more information see 'online option' on top ribbon.

Study Skills and Learning
Learning is an active, not passive, process. I avidly read new studies on learning and studying and brain science and am trying to educate myself on how people learn best. Many kids struggle in school because of poor learning and studying skills. I like to address this in my tutoring.
Home-grown success
My three girls have all graduated from college with honors. Two of them were homeschooled all the way through high school and one through middle school. Yes, I am proud of them!
